| Het tijdperk van uitdagen (1893-1914)
De oorsprong van het uitdagen is gelegen in de wijze van spelen van The Hockey Association of Canada voorafgaand aan 1893. Van 1887 tot en met 1892 werd er geen round-robin competitie gespeeld (alle teams spelen één of meerdere keren tegen elkaar), maar konden teams elkaar uitdagen. De winnaar van de definitieve uitdaging (the final challange) werd winnaar van de league. Met de introductie van de Stanley Cup werd deze spelwijze voortgezet, terwijl er tevens league kampioenschappen werden toegevoegd, waarbij de winnaars van de leagues elkaar konden uitdagen. Indien een team kampioen werd in dezelfde league als waarin de huidige Stanley Cup winnaar speelde, dan kreeg dat team de Stanley Cup zonder een uitdaging. In 1912 besloten de bestuurders van de Stanley Cup, dat de trofee niet meer via uitdagingen kon worden gewonnen maar uitsluitend aan het einde van het reguliere seizoen. In 1908 werd The Allan Cup geïntroduceerd als de trofee voor Canadese amateurteams, omdat de Stanley Cup steeds meer het symbool werd van de professionele ijshockey suprematie. Hiermee was een uiteindelijke afsplitsing van de amateur teams van de competitie om de Stanley Cup onafwendbaar geworden. Het seizoen 1913-1914 was uiteindelijk het laatste seizoen in deze opzet. | ||

| NHA/NHL vs PCHA/WCHL/WHL kampioenen (1915-1926) Enkele dagen na de Victoria Aristocrats - Toronto Hockey Club-serie, Stanley Cup bestuurder William Foran schreef NHA president Emmett Quinn dat de bestuurders 'volkomen tevreden waren' dat de vertegenwoordigers van de drie pro competities (NHA, PCHA en Maritime) een nieuwe opzet zouden maken voor de reeks van wedstrijden die ieder seizoen gespeeld moesten worden om de beker. De Stanley Cup kampioenschap finale wisselde ieder jaar tussen het Oosten en het Westen en werd er afwisselend gespeeld volgens de NHA of PCHA regels. Het formaat voor de Stanley Cup kampioenschap veranderd in 1922, met de oprichting van de West Canada Hockey League (WCHL). Nu drie competities streden om de Cup werd het noodzakelijk om een halve finale-serie tussen twee league kampioenen te introduceren, terwijl de derde league kampioen met een 'bye' direct doorging naar de finale. In 1924 viel het doek voor de PCHA en alleen de teams van Vancouver en Victoria gingen over naar de WCHL. Met het verlies van de PCHA, keerde het kampioenschap terug naar één reeks. Na hun overwinning in 1925, werden de Victoria Cougars de laatste ploeg buiten de NHL die de Stanley Cup wisten te winnen. In het seizoen 1925-1926 werd de WCHL omgedoopt tot de Western Hockey League (WHL). Met het verlies van de Victoria Cougars in 1926, was het de laatste keer dat een niet NHL team streed om de Stanley Cup. | ||||

| National Hockey League (1927 tot heden) De WHL werd in 1926 opgedoekt en haar activa werden gekocht door de NHL. Hierdoor bleef de NHL als enige competitie over om te strijden om de cup. Andere competities en clubs hebben nog voorstellen gedaan voor uitdagingen, maar vanaf dat jaar af heeft geen enkel niet NHL team gespeeld voor de cup. In 1947 bereikte de NHL een akkoord met de curatoren PD Ross en Cooper Smeaton om de controle van de beker aan de NHL te verlenen, zodat de competitie zich tegen uitdagingen van andere competities kon beschermen en verzoeken om een uitdaging kon weigeren. In 2006 oordeelde het Ontario Superior Court dat de door de curatoren gestelde voorwaarden tegen de door Lord Stanley's gestelde condities ingingen. De NHL heeft er vervolgens mee ingestemd dat andere teams om de Cup mogen spelen indien de NHL competitie geen doorgang vindt, zoals het geval was in het seizoen 2004-2005 (NHL lockout). | ||||
